Does Apple Have Its Own MDM?

Apple has a Device Enrollment Program which automates and simplifies iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and tvOS devices enrollment in MDM programs. DEP is available for devices purchased from Apple, Authorized Resellers or Cellular Carriers. If a device was purchased in other way or was donated, it can be enrolled in DEP manually using Apple Configurator. This way, businesses, schools and other organizations can enroll brand new and used devices into their MDM Programs.
Apple has also introduced Apple Business Manager and Apple School Manager which are available in supported countries and regions. These services allow IT departments to add their companies or schools MDM servers to these programs to remotely manage and configure enrolled devices. So, these programs may be considered as Apple’s MDM Programs.
Apple DEP supports following devices:
- iOS devices with iOS 7 or later
- Mac computers with OS X Mavericks 10.9 or later
- Apple TV devices (4th generation or later) with tvOS 10.2 or later
Both Apple Business Manager and Apple School Manager work with corporate-owned, corporate-shared and personal devices enrolled within bring-your-own-device, or BYOD, policy. Administrators need to create a corporate Apple ID and set up an MDM server which will allow them to remotely manage all the devices enrolled.
If an employee who used his or her personal Apple device in business or school activities leaves a company and needs his device to be removed from the MDM program,
IT administrator should erase it from the MDM server. This way, the unenrolled device won’t be managed by MDM any longer and also won’t have access to corporate data.
