What is an MDM Profile?

MDM Profile, or Mobile Device Management profile, is a component of MDM software deployed on the enrolled device itself. It is used for settings configuration on multiple devices at the same time which makes control over mobiles devices easier as IT staff doesn’t need to configure each device manually.
Basically, MDM profile is an XML file consisting of payloads which load settings and authorization information on mobile devices enrolled in the MDM program.
MDM configuration profiles allow to automate settings, accounts, credentials and restriction configuration. Configuration profiles can be created manually, via MDM software or using Apple Configurator 2.
As MDM profiles can be signed and encrypted, their usage can be restricted to a specific mobile device which will prevent settings change, except usernames and passwords. It is also possible to mark MDM configuration profiles as locked to a specific device.
Depending on MDM Software used by a company, MDM profiles can be distributed in different ways, such as an email attachment, link to the company’s webpage, or built-in user portal in the MDM software. Users will be prompted to install the configuration profile once they open the email attachment or once the configuration profile was downloaded on the device via web browser.
Another important thing to say here is that only one MDM profile can be installed on a device at the one time. If you need to install another configuration profile, the one already installed on your device should be removed.
